State Representative Kevin Miller announced the passage of House Bill 44 by the Ohio House of Representatives. The bill, co-sponsored by State Representative Joe Miller, aims to allow local police departments to fill vacant civil service positions without requiring unnecessary exams if certain conditions are met.

The bipartisan legislation will enable police departments to bypass competitive exams when they can demonstrate that these exams are not needed and that an applicant possesses exceptional qualifications. This change aligns statutory cities with charter cities in their ability to hire law enforcement personnel.

“House Bill 44 will expedite the process to get well-trained officers on the field, ultimately increasing the safety of our communities and directly addressing workforce needs,” said Kevin Miller.

Additionally, the bill permits police chiefs to facilitate training programs for new cadets. Graduates who meet appointment requirements may be hired directly into relevant departments. An amendment also modifies training requirements for new police chiefs in Ohio, allowing localized training at approved regional facilities instead of solely in Columbus.

The bill now moves to the Ohio Senate for consideration.
